Women in the Portuguese Colonial Empire: The Theatre of Shadows compiles an extensive collection of essays on the status of women throughout the vast Portuguese colonial space, from Brazil to the Far East, crossing Europe, Africa and India, between the 16th and the 20th century. Absent or mystified, silenced or victimized, women in the History of Portugal and its colonial venture are the living example of the part historiographical discourse, ideology and popular memory have played in the construction of identities, their practices and representations. The production and critical consumption of History have long revealed countless gaps and silences within its own discourse. This book questions the reason for such gaps and silences and wonders about the real role of all those who do not or have never had access to power and to the perpetuating word, those whose voices have been systematically erased from sources and documents because of past or present attending interests. Women in the Portuguese Colonial Empire: The Theatre of Shadows congregates a wide assortment of disciplines so as to provide multiple independent viewpoints, sources and methodologies. By bringing authors from around the world together, this work ensures that the various cultures and memories that are part of the global saga, as well as the various versions of the history of the Portuguese colonial empire, may be heard.

Heidelberg
A picturesque town featuring picturesque Heidelberg Castle and picturesque postcards, it couldn't be more picturesque. Visitors rarely miss a stroll along the Hauptstrasse through the old town.
Reichstag, Berlin
Germany's past and future are represented in no other building quite like this one. Construction started in 1884, and a decade later it was the parliament for Bismark's German Empire. After the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989, British architect Sir Norman Foster's glass dome has capped off the Hitler-tainted building's rebirth as a united democracy. Visitors can walk right up to the dome and even have a meal there.
Cologne Cathedral
The dom is a positively enormous thirteenth-century Gothic cathedral in the centre of the city (a few steps from the central train station) that makes a trip to Cologne worthwhile on its own.
The Marienplatz glockenspiel, Munich
This hyperactive cuckoo clock in central Munich forms part of the town hall's Gothic façade. Time your visit for 11a.m, noon or 5p.m and you'll get to see the re-enactment of Duke William V's wedding to Renata von Lothringen.
Neuschwanstein
If you're one of those picky travelers who'd rather see the original than be satisfied with the Disney replication, you'll need to brave the crowds and make a pilgrimage to this famous "Sleeping Beauty" castle. (Extra Bonus; there's now also Musical Theatre Neuschwanstein, a nightly performance based on King Ludwig II's tragic life.)
Dachau concentration camp
No matter what you've read or how many movies you've seen on the subject, it's hard to appreciate what happened under Hitler's regime without a trip to a concentration camp memorial. Dachau wasn't the largest such death machine but it was the first to be built, and a few hours of wandering the grounds will likely leave a powerful imprint in your soul.
Soak in a spa at Baden-Baden
Germany's most famous spa lies in the heart of the Black Forest. Its famed curative mineral waters bubble up from thermal springs at temperatures over 68.C. The Therme of Caracilla is popular with families, but for a more upscale (and less clothed) experience, try Friedrichsbad
Cycle along the Danube
The cycle path that runs along the Danube river passes monasteries, castles, meadows and forests on a route that is littered with UNESCO World Heritage Sites. If you get hooked, you can continue all the way down to Vienna and Bratislava.
Windsurf LakeConstance
Near the Swiss border, the winds of Lake Constance lure German windsurfers by the dozen. Rent a board at Strandbad Eichwald. If your arms get tired, you can also fish the lake (with a permit) for pike, perch and eel. Or head to Lindau, rent a bike, and circle the water on two wheels. Or just take a dip; the mountains surrounding the lake provide magical backdrop for a swim.
Mountain bike the Black Forest
The Black Forest park has the largest network of mountain-bike trails in the world - about 1400km worth, and with routes for all levels. There are several places to access the trails: the Elz and Simonswalder valleys, Triberg, Schonach, Schonwald, Furtwangen, St Georgen, Hardt, Lauterbach, Schramberg and Tennenbronn.

Want to have a breakthrough in your business? Then learn the art of telling purposeful stories just how Magic Johnson did. A story is an element of words that allows people to go on an emotional journey inside of which is the core information and facts that are necessary to show proof of progress. Let's think back to the beginning when humans were somewhat primitive. We weren't as fast as a lion, or most of the pre-historic creatures, but somehow we were able to move to the top of the food chain. We learned back then not to go into the jungle after dark. That's because we learned how to tell purposeful stories like "Don't go in the jungle after dark or else we won't be seeing you again; "Mutar, Putar, and Futar did last year and we haven't seen them since." Think about it, these stories had all of the elements that allowed those who heard it to go on an emotional journey. Then you add the facts like "Mutar, Putar, and Futar were never seen again.
To drive this home, let me tell you the brief version of how Magic Johnson used storytelling to start one of the most successful chains of theatres in the country.
Magic and his partner went in to see Peter Guber who's now the owner of the "Gold State Warriors" who at the time was in the theatre and the theatre-building business. Magic told him about a land far away that had the most robust market place for movies. This land's citizens didn't care about movie reviews, the citizens all are a close-knit community. Then he included the facts, viz: how often people went to the movies, how much they spent on concessions, etc. After that story, Peter Guber said, "Yes, let's build movie theatres there; where is it? Magic said it is six miles from here in Baldwin Hills, the African American community. We all know what has happened since. Can you see how powerful storytelling can be?
So, here's what I want you to do:
Action steps:
1. Create a story around your key selling proposition. The story must have an emotional element to it. If you are in the weight-loss niche, tell a story of a client that you might have helped who fitted in her wedding dress for the first time in 12 years and the emotions she had when she saw herself in it.
2. Talk about someone who didn't use you and how that affected their results.
3. Sprinkle some facts and figures throughout your story to add/give the solid information they need.
Remember this, people buy based on emotions, and what better way to evoke emotions than by telling a story.
